Solid & attractive base for rolling chair, June 7, 2011

I chose this Tri-Fold bamboo mat as a base for a chair that rolls on five hard plastic wheels, which I use at a large desk. My apartment has soft wall-to-wall carpeting (10 millimeters thick) that dents very easily from sustained pressure by table and chair legs, vacuum-cleaner wheels, etc. The Anji Tri-fold bamboo mat, which measures 12 millimeters thick, easily supports my weight atop the chair, which rolls smoothly on the mat without scuffing or gouging it. The mat also protects my carpet. It feels like a patch of quality hardwood floor, with nicely beveled edges. It has a semi-glossy finish that resists scuffing — although minor dents and nicks have appeared in the mat’s surface with sustained use of the chair atop it. The only functional drawback I’ve noticed is that, over time, my mat tends to shift slightly on my carpet. But I can easily slide it back into the optimal position with its lip centered under my desk. Although this bamboo chair mat costs far more than a standard vinyl chair mat, it has far better quality and appearance — and I expect it will outlast most any vinyl mat.

When I first received this Anji bamboo mat, the backing material (bottom layer) had a strong chemical odor. So I stood the mat on its side for a day and night on my balcony, to let it out-gas. That eliminated the unpleasant odor.

    Quality Item, April 9, 2009

This is a well made and solid item. Having said that, there are a couple of things you should consider before you purchase this mat. First, it is 3/4″ high and could possibly be in the way of a door on a desk unit. You’ll end up removing the door as we did. Second, it may cause the arms on a desk chair to hit a slide out keyboard shelf on a desk unit.
Again, this is a quality product. We are very satisfied with it after buying numerous plastic chair mats over the years. Just make sure it will fit in your application.

    Amazon Verified Purchase(What’s this?)
This review is from: Anji Mountain Bamboo Chairmat & Rug Co. Tri-Fold Bamboo Chairmat, 47-Inch-by-51-Inch, 12mm Thick, With Lip, Natural (Kitchen)

We recently remodeled our home including wonderful new carpet. With the new carpet, my desk chair just wouldn’t roll at all making any movement at my desk a pain. Since my carpet is deep and very dense with a nice pad the chair wheels just sank and grabbed. I use my home office to meet clients and didn’t want the old clear chair mats to ruin the look of my office space so opted for the bamboo chair mat instead. After reading up on the mats I decided to go with the more expensive, thicker mat since my carpet is actually thicker than 3/4″ carpet/pad depth recommended in the chair mat description. The best price I found was on Amazon as usual and free shipping with my prime account made it even more attractive for such a large & weighty item. I was concerned about the wood finish since these mats don’t come in oak, but the natural finish is not as light as I feared and is a good blend with my oak furniture. I LOVE THIS MAT! I can now roll into my desk easily and/or move back to pull out my keyboard or access my printer in the side cabinet. The mat is very stable, doesn’t move around, and looks great.

My husband also has an office set-up and was having the same trouble I was. He wanted a smaller mat so decided to take a chance with the small & thinner roll-up one. His is also working well, but you can feel movement under your feet from one slat to the other because of the thick ‘cushion’ of carpet and pad underneath.

The lip on my larger chair mat fits my desk knee space perfectly, but would not have fit in the space on my husbands older desk. The lip on his smaller mat was the same size as mine, but he had only to saw off one slat to make his fit under his desk. It was an easy and tidy modification that you don’t notice at all – definitely a plus reason for a smaller mat for him. He loves his too!
