Antique Kerman Rug from Persia, circa 1900 – A lavishly classical Persian design of curling “sickle palmettes,” large volutes, and fine flowering vines in soft red, terracotta, and pale grayish blue, unfolds itself graciously across the rich ivory ground of this superb antique Kerman. The two minor vinescroll borders are narrow, finely detailed, and small-scale, in contrast to the grand scale and presence of the field, which picks up again in the lovely vinescroll and palmette main border. The deeper tan ground of the central border harmonizes with the field while the blue ground borders that flank it provide the solid framing effect for the main design.
