Depends on the modern rug. If it was black and white checkerboard, then no, that would look terrible.

If it is one of the mostly solid tan rugs that are very popular now, then it would be acceptable. There are a lot of modern rug designs that are still very classic.

When decorating it should be more about how a piece makes you feel, than whether it is acceptable. If the rug pulls you into it and mixes well with your other pieces you should use it.

Absolutely…my mother did that with a gold and black rug with touches of red and mixed it with blond contemporary pieces and she wound up with an very elegant and quite beautiful original and different look. I too love and have the eclectic look.

You’re the one who will have to live with it. As long as you can be happy with it, then go for it.

My style is eclectic as well and over the years, I’ve decided that if I like it – then it works. I have a country/victorian/vintage mix with a 50’s kitchen.
I’d say the Persian rug should be fine. From what I’ve seen in various magazines – Better Homes & Gardens, etc – Persian rugs seem to show up everywhere.
Put the rug down, if you like it, sit back and enjoy it!
