Walter Hawley authored this tome in 1913. What is unique about this book among the many that I own is the detail and depth the author included in discussing everything from every method of weaving and knotting carpets, to analyzing the world sources and history, to discussing colors. One of the most helpful things here is many charts breaking down every type of carpet by type and number of knots; fibers, designs, size, number of medallions, borders, etc. throughout history. Insanely in-depth detail that mavens will really appreciate. I can’t overstate how great this book is.

Make sure the publication you get has illustrations. In the Dover reprint, there are only color plates but many b&w rugs plus drawings of medallions and symbols.

If you only buy one book on oriental rugs, this is the one, it’s old but
the details and info on border designs is invaluable.
