ORIENTAL RUGS Antique and Modern

SINCE the appearance, in 1900, of the excellent work of Mr. John Kimberly Mumford on Oriental Rugs, the public interest in these fabrics has so largely increased that the author feels warranted in offering this monograph, which aims to treat the subject in a way that will not only appeal to the general reader but be of value to the student.

Look in the Look Inside! feature above. Walter Hawley authored this tome in 1913 and it is a thick book. The only downside is that only 11 of the plates are in color. What is unique about this book among the many that I own is the detail and depth the author included in discussing everything from every method of weaving and knotting carpets, to analyzing the world sources and history, to discussing colors. One of the most helpful things here is many charts breaking down every type of carpet by type and number of knots; fibers, designs, size, number of medallions, borders, etc. throughout history. Insanely in-depth detail that mavens will really appreciate. I can’t overstate how great this book is.
