I am an American in the US military. I think most Americans know very little about the Middle East in general and Iran specifically. Many Americans do not know the difference between Arabs and Persians. They think that because they are all Muslim, they are all the same. I think that most of the Iranian people are probably like people everywhere – they want to have a job, a home, and a safe place to raise their families. I think that throughout recent history the Iranian people have suffered as their government has been influenced by extremists. I do not think that this is entirely the fault of the Iranian people (the Shah was quite corrupt and we in the US helped support him). However, I wish that the Iranian government would not define its political ideals solely as the antagonists of the west. They can still have their own sovereignty (and positions that differ from US positions) without advocating some of the extreme positions that they now are preaching. I feel that the Iranian people are often a pawn of this sort of thinking. It is easy to whip up support for an anti-west platform but a lot harder to provide real solutions. Basically, I am trying to say that I do not think ill of the average Iranian on the street, I just hope they are able to influence their government to be more diplomatic and less extreme.

PS I love the rugs, especially Tabriz.
